2008 WRLD Conference Postponed
Spring 2008

Due to a scheduling conflict, the 2008 Waterpark Resorts Leadership & Development (WRLD) Conference will be postponed until 2009. The WRLD Conference, organized by Aquatics International and Waterpark Resorts Today, has been held in conjunction with the International Pool & Spa Expo for the past two years. However, in 2008 the renamed International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo will be in Las Vegas at the same time as the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions in Orlando, Fla. IAAPA is a major show for waterpark professionals and the aquatics industry.
WRLD organizers plan to bring the conference back in 2009 when IPSPE and IAAPA will be in Las Vegas. Aquatics International and Waterpark Resorts Today are published by Hanley Wood, LLC, owner of IPSPE, WRLD Conference and numerous other trade shows and conferences.

Great Wolf Resorts Investor Angles for Sale

Wisconsin Dells, Wis.-based Great Wolf Resorts needs new leadership and should consider selling, investor Eric Hovde told CEO John Emery recently, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Hovde, president/CEO of Washington, D.C.-based Hovde Capital Advisors, LLC, and 5.2 percent shareholder of Great Wolf wants the company to replace two or more of its eight directors with candidates who better reflect shareholders wishes. He also wants to nominate at least one new member, the Journal Sentinel reported. This marks the second time in recent years that an investor has called for a sale of the indoor waterpark operation.

SeaWorld's Aquatica Makes Grand Opening

Its official: The staff at Aquatica by SeaWorld has welcomed its first guests. The Orlando, Fla., waterpark opened March 1 and its the first major new park addition to the Orlando area in nearly a decade.
Aquatica combines the thrills of a waterpark with the animal encounter experiences of SeaWorlds other properties. The 59-acre park features 36 water slides, six rivers and lagoons, two wave pools and an 80,000-square-foot sandy beach. The parks signature ride is Dolphin Plunge, a clear tube slide that shoots riders through a pool of black-and-white Commersons dolphins.

Workshop Stresses Mixed-Use, Sustainability, Extreme Sports

Mixed-use, sustainability, extreme sports: These were some of the key issues and trends discussed at the Developing & Financing Hotel Waterpark Resorts Workshop presented Feb. 28-29. Held at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio, the conference featured tours of the resorts recently expanded indoor waterpark. Experts told the 230-plus industry professionals that they should embrace green technology, especially because resorts have such large utility costs. Other seminars focused on adding convention centers and so-called extreme aquatics as ways to draw new markets.
Attendees heard from keynote speakers Tom Kiser, Americas Energy Coach, on sustainability strategies and Kalahari Resort owner Todd Nelson about upcoming plans for the firms new resort in Fredericksburg, Va., scheduled to open in 2009. The conference was presented by JLC Hospitality Consulting, Uni-Systems and William L. Haralson & Associates.

Waveyard Gets Greenlight in Ariz.

Voters in Mesa, Ariz., approved plans last November for Waveyard, a waterpark resort project planned on 125 acres east of Phoenix. As of press time, owners Richard Mladick and Jerry Hug had yet to submit formal site plans to the city of Mesa.
The project is to be a mixed-use development featuring an artificial white-water kayaking river with up to Class 4 rapids; an artificial beach with a simulated ocean capable of producing waves up to 12 feet high; a scuba lagoon; a snorkeling pond with reefs; and a rock-climbing center. A resort hotel with an indoor waterpark, villas and retail space is also planned as part of the project.

Great Wolf Lodge to Continue Growth in 2008

Great Wolf Lodge will continue expanding in 2008. According to reports in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved plans for a new property on Lake Lanier in Cumming, Ga. The city of Cumming and the Forsyth County Commission agreed to provide incentives, including tax breaks and capital improvements. Construction is expected to begin by mid-2008, and the project is slated to include a luxury hotel with an indoor waterpark and conference center. In addition, the grand opening of the Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, Wash., is set for March 2008.
