Through much of the 1900s, Slovakia was tied to Czechoslovakia until 1993. Though Slovakia remains close with the Czech Republic, its still trying to assert independence by removing its footprint from Czechoslovakia and its carbon footprint from the planet.
Located in Poprad, Slovakia, AquaCity allows Slovak residents and tourists to take guilt-free holidays. Along with offering stunning views of the snow-capped High Tatras mountains, the four-star, eco-friendly waterpark resort runs on wind, water and sun. Photocells are built into the glass walls of the complex to generate 80 percent of the electrical requirement. The resort claims its eco-friendly methods save 24 tons of carbon dioxide from being pumped into the atmosphere daily.
One big reason is the water. Drilled out of a subterranean lake, the geothermally heated, mineral-rich water is 120 degrees Fahrenheit and 15,000 years old. That super-heated H20 heats the hotels, buildings and pools. Sanitization happens through an ultraviolet system that allows low chlorine levels in its stainless steel-lined vessels.
Being environmentally friendly isnt always so serious. At the AquaPark, there are body and tube slides, a wave pool, sprays and satellite pools with 380 massage jets. Theres also a therapy pool using the naturally geothermally heated water, the Sapphire Pool with waves, jets, bubble benches, and laser lights to make it the party pool, and Blue Diamond pool with swim-up bar, designed to mimic a Roman Bath. Now thats a great way to relax and Czech out.
